Will I ever be a domestic woman?

When my husband first met me I had been eating string cheese and slim fast shakes for breakfast lunch and dinner. You can judge me now because I now look back at those days and laugh at how ridiculous I was.  I would do a drive by at Walgreens after my night shift at Uncle Sams and would stock up on my slim fast and cheese sticks for the night. I would go to my empty refrigerator reach for my water and go back to my bed and begin to eat my sad excuse for a dinner.

The sad part is my husband is a great cook.  Here I am eating string cheese anything microwave eating canned food right out of the can and my fall back slim fast. He is eating all the food groups and cooking balanced meals for himself. My husband for some reason still liked me even though I was far from being domestic. My apartment at the time had a used couch in the living room a hundred fashion magazines stacked up on the counter bare walls my bed my TV  tons of makeup and clothes everywhere.  My husband said I lived in a survival apartment. He shared with me how he felt sad for me because it was practically bare. As one could guess I was extremely embarrassed but tried to hide it because I liked him a ton.

My husband and I kept dating for a year before getting married and he opened my eyes up to great cuisine. My husband is pretentious about his food but in a cute funny way.  I started wanting to eat like a normal person because my husband opened my eyes up to a world of awesome food. He knows about famous chefs such as Thomas Keller. We ate at one of his famous restaurants Bouchon. It is located in the beautiful Yountville. One has said it is The Culinary Capitol of California. My husband gave me the run down on this guy and how his attention to detail and his craft is amazing. He is working a tier one business and his delicious food speaks for itself.

Now that I had started eating this change your life food I could not go back to my sad meals anymore. Of course the old rat eating Crystal would come back every once in awhile and eat corn out of a can.  I slowly started to learn how to cook. I actually know how to cook fish now. Shocking I know. I am still afraid to try cooking but little by little I am pushing out of my comfort zone and willing to take a stab at it. I will never be the perfect domestic woman like Julia Child. However I am stumbling through with my beginner pants on. I May not be a domestic woman but I am a woman who keeps willing to fail and burn the fish over and over again until I get it right. This will have to do for now and thank God for my husband who rules the kitchen.

I love this post! Its so true that once you try amazing food its difficult to go back. I too am a foodie so I get it! A few restaurant tips: we recently went to Virtu Honest Craft as well as House Brasserie in Old Town. Both were delicious. Weve done two date nights at Sur La Table as well. Their cooking classes are so fun and the food is delicious! If you ever want to do one during the day Ill totally join you! Happy cooking! Id be happy to trade recipes :)

Alicia thanks for your awesome advice. I would love to trade recipes. For now they will be my husbands recipes. However they are amazing and some of them are from his parents who know who to make great southern cuisine.

Loved this honest post! You are such and amazing woman Crystal! I think for some cooking is like a hobby. They actually enjoy doing it. For me I {used to} HATE the act of cooking BUT Im such a HUGE foodie and the food isnt going to cook its self (my hubby doesnt cook unless hes forced into it so count your blessings 😉 haha) Over time I found that if I make a menu for the week and go to the store and get all the ingredients Im more likely to stick to it. I love Ree Drumond the pioneer woman. Her recipes are easy and delish! And some nights Im so exhausted from cooking I dont even feel like eating much. So that helps with portion control 😉
Anyway I love your blog and look forward to reading!

Thank you for your advice Bryanna. I do thank my lucky stars that my husband is a wonderful cook. Thank God for not eating canned corn anymore. I will look the pioneer woman up. You have encouraged me to keep at it.

I read cookbooks the way some people read novels. I love to pick a few things from my little garden look in the refrigerator then create something with Ive found. I hope you not only learn how to cook but learn to love it!

Linda that sounds amazing. I love how you are able to just go and pick fresh vegetables from your garden and cook delicious fresh food. I hope i will learn to love it and hopefully stop burning the fish.

Oh Crystal….I remember that apartment. The only room with anything in it was the bedroom. And I remember trips to Walgreens where you would stock up on Zone Bars Cheese Sticks and Slim Fast. Oh so fun weve come a long way!

Haha! You have been to the survival apartment. Those where the days. We really where so silly. I do not know why I needed to keep all those magazines. Thank God I did not become a hoarder .
