Gone Girl Book Review

Marriage is supposed to be happily ever after but it doesnt always work out that way does it? In Gillian Flynns Gone Girl she paints a portrait of a failing marriage suspected murder deceit manipulation and a battle of the wills between Nick Dunne and Amy Dunne. All these elements create a one of a kind thriller that will keep you up until the wee hours waiting to know how it ends.
Nick the husband wakes up early one morning expecting it to be a normal run of the mill day. What he gets instead is a bunch of smashed furniture items thrown around the living room and his wife missing in action. Ironically this all happens around the time they are to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.
Nick does the noble thing and reports her missing to the cops. However his behavior is strange and seems highly unemotional for a man who should be grieving his missing wife. On the other hand Amy Dunne is no peach herself. She grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth and her cold demeanor would make anybodys hair stand up on the back of their neck. They both tend to play head games and it makes for a lively guessing game of figuring out what is going on behind the curtain.
The first half of the story goes back and forth between Amys diary and her telling the story of their five year marriage. It refers back to Nick and what he is going through dealing with the police looking for clues that Amy has left with her treasure hunt for her husband for their anniversary. As the story goes on and Amys tales of their marriage starts to paint a progressively poor picture the evidence builds toward Nick looking guilty.  It is hard to decide who to believe. It is like Doctor Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde. Both of them have character defects and also have great character traits. Who knows who is speaking the truth and what happened to Amy?
This intense chilling novel is a one of a kind story. Gillian Flynn perfects what a mystery is and keeps one guessing till the last page. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves psychological thrillers and always keeping one on their toes wondering what will happen next. This is a book I will read again and that in itself speaks volumes to what a showpiece Gone Girl is.

    Hi Crystal welcome back.
The way you write about books is sure to make people want to go out and get it. This sounds like a story with quite a different twist. Be interesting to see how it ends.

Thanks! Yes there are tons of stories like this in the newspapers all the time. Thriller books are not for everyone. However the book keeps you guessing all the way to the end. =)

I reviewed this book too a while back when I was still posting book reviews on my website. A story like Nick and Amys isnt everyones cup of tea. They are so unlikable but thats what I enjoyed most about the book. The structure of the novel is also quite the feat as well and Flynn pulled it off. The movie adaptation was also great considering the need to convey the different points in time as well as the two perspectives in a way that wouldnt lose a film audience.

Gone Girl is on my list of books with the main reason I havent being that I dont want it affecting my WIP. But passages from her work have been used by one of my writing teachers and whether a writer or reader with no interest in writing almost everyone seems to get something from it.

Pat she is a very good writer. I see why your teacher used passages from the book in her class. If you like psychological thrillers then this is the book for you! =)
