I am a procrastinator guilty as charged.

As I was brainstorming about coming up with a blog post for this week I laughed at myself at all the ridiculous chores I procrastinate on. Why do I wait till the last-minute when it is the most inconvenient time that to buy something or run an errand? It is as if I am saying to myself “yes Crystal you love to irritate yourself all the time and that’s why you put things off till the last-minute.” Then I can go into freak out mode like a crazed woman running around like a maniac and trying to get everything done in a short period. However I did not just create this habit out of thin air. I used to procrastinate on everything when I was younger. I would drive my cars into the ground and the car would cost more to repair then what it was worth. I would wait till the last possible minute to do my homework. When I got grounded I would wait till the last hour to do my cleaning duties and end up getting grounded for more time because I didn’t finish cleaning. When my husband was dating me I would go to Walgreens every day to get food and not go to the grocery store once a week like every other human being on the planet. My fridge was empty and I only had water to offer to people. Luckily I have gotten rid of the blowing the engines in the car habit and a few others. Here is a list of items I still procrastinate on. I am documenting this now so I stop running around the same mountain.

# I wait till the last-minute to buy shampoo. I am out and then I become desperate and use my husband’s shampoo which smells like a bottle of cologne.

# The trash can will be overflowing with trash and I walk past it ten times and say “nah I will get it later.”

# On my way to work my gas tank is below empty and I pick that time to wait to fill up my tank. I do not know how I have not been stranded on the side of the road because my car ran out of gas.

# I despised going to the bank up until recently when I get paid in a check now and it is inevitable that I have to go. It’s as if they were going to beat me as soon as I walked in the bank. I still wait till the last minute to go to the bank.

# I sometimes still forget to take my makeup off at night. Even though I spend 45 minutes in the morning doing it. Where is the logic in that?

# My purse will look like a tornado blew through it before I will attempt to clean it out. There will be receipts in there from Christmas.

# I wait till the night before I go on a vacation to pack. I just throw everything in there. I always figure they will have an iron when I get to the hotel. Meanwhile my husband’s suitcase is neatly packed like he paid someone professionally to pack for him.

# Going to the doctor is like pulling teeth for me. I will wait till I absolutely have to go. It as if I am going to die by going to the physician.

I want to work on being more efficient and not have wrinkled clothes. I want to find things in my purse without having to dump it in on the floor. Being stranded on the side of the road doesnt sound like a perfect day to me. Besides I am only driving myself mad.

Is there anyone else like me who procrastinated with the silliest tasks?  What are the  day-to-day chores in your life that you procrastinate at?

I procrastinate with haircuts taxes and waking up. I dont much like any of those things so put them off unless I am traveling then I am on them in a heartbeat. I should take my taxes with me and do them abroad. Theres an idea. Thanks.

I procrastinate with doing my hair. I wait until the last minute and then Im too tired to actually do it correctly and I rush through it. Sometimes I wait to the last minute to eat after a workout.

Hi Crystal. I am not the least shy about acknowledging my faults but for some reason procrastination has never been one of the long list that I possess. Maybe one could say that I procrastinate over correcting those faults but since I have no intention of ever doing so That would be inaccurate !

I am completely opposite. The things I hate to do I do first otherwise they just hang around to ruin my day. I have downsized my clothes and 95% are no-iron so that takes care of that. I live in a rural area and cant think of anything worse than running out of gas on a dark isolated country road so my gas tank is never below half full. Anyway you get the picture. Its not that Im that well organized its that I hate being frazzled.

I am guilty too so we are in the same club… LOL. I have a thing about putting away clean and folded laundry. Its silly but it will stay in the laundry room until I have to do another wash. When I do put it away I am delighted with myself. Go figure. :-)

Im no so much a procrastinator as I am someone who has issues with prioritizing tasks. That being said I always was the type of student who had everything mapped out and papers written well before they were do. In the middle of moving I ended doing hardly any research for a 20-page paper and then I wrote it (complete with citations) in a 24-hour span while standing at my breakfast bar because the apartment didnt have any furniture in it. Kinda makes me think standing is the way to go in order to get that kind of stuff done!

Every habit we have including the habits that no longer serve us did serve us at some point in time which is why we adopted them. If you know what motivates you to change a habit and you focus on the motivation I believe many habits can be changed more easily than we think. In fact other than focusing on what motivates you to change something (where will I be without this habit) its best not to think about the habits you want to change or to berate yourself even by joking about the habits you want to change. Stay focused on your goal and develop easy action steps to help you change the habits you want to change. I dont procrastinate too much. I make lists of things I want to accomplish. If I postpone accomplishing something on my list its usually because it doesnt feel right to do it at that time. If I just let it go and dont think too much about it I find myself soon motivated to tackle whatever it is.

Hi Crystal. Im unsure if you are in my Bloggers Helping Bloggers group but I think you are. Ive seen your comments on others blogs and figured I would pay you a visit!

I am a procrastinator but Im not as bad as I used to be. Since discovering how affirmations can change my life Ive been more positive and am convinced I am on the right path.

Ive had many problems but now like you I am finding solutions. With a bit of effort (okay sometimes with a LOT of effort) I know I can succeed.

    As can you.

Great post! The topic of procrastination never gets old. Interestingly enough I was more of a procrastinator as a kid because I felt there was all the time in the world to get things done. As I get older I realize its more fulfilling to be proactive and use time to my advantage. Thanks for sharing.

Chandler told me this idea (I dont know if he still does it) but you tell yourself to do 2 hard things every morning. Somedays I do that and make myself do the little annoying things I am procrastinating.

Im a proud member of the Procrastinators Club or I would be if I ever got around to joining. Thanks for the reminder on the car. I keep forgetting about changing the oil and that Ive run out of wiper fluid… you think Im joking Im not. Im West Indian I was born to procrastinate. I ran into a friend yesterday who had invited me over fro brunch… two weeks ago and I never got back to her. I have recently changed jobs and never shared my new coordinates with anyone so she asked for my card. I was so stunned to find them in my purse that I just stared at them for a while before giving her one. Laughed out loud commisserated and generally felt better about my own habits after reading this post procrastinators like company makes them feel less conspicuous. :)
